Beachy spots across Europe

When the weather in the UK is grey and dull, it’s only natural to want to seek out somewhere further afield for some much-needed sunshine. In 2022, there were 45.6 million holiday trips made by UK residents alone. But where do you go? Fortunately, we’re spoilt for choice with sun-drenched neighbours across Europe. Here are some ideas to help you get the ball rolling.

Ibiza in Spain

The glitz and glamour of Ibiza attracts a huge crowd each summer, but there’s a more down-to-earth side to this island that’s just waiting to be explored. Famous beaches here include Cala Comte and Benirrás Beach with pristine waters to take a dip in. Aside from the beach, you can soak up culture in the Museu d’Art Contemporani or relax in a plethora of cool rooftop and outdoor bars, many of which are set to a cool soundtrack that adds to the atmosphere as the sun begins to set.

Ayia Napa in Cyprus

Although many might view Ayia Napa as a party island, it’s also a popular destination for families and couples. Set in sunny Cyprus, you’ll be treated to the warm, crystal-clear Mediterranean Sea and because it’s a tourist-friendly island, you’ll have plenty of amenities at your disposal. The famous Nissi Beach is a 500-metre stretch of sand that showcases Ayia Napa in all its glory. The Cypriot cuisine will keep you full with plenty of fried halloumi, olives and souvlakia.

Sicily in Italy

Forgo the tourist crowds of the Amalfi coast and venture further south to Sicily instead. The beaches here are sun-drenched and the surrounding Mediterranean Sea is crystal-clear. Sicily is especially appealing to history lovers, with plenty of Greek and Roman temples to see. The cuisine goes beyond your typical Italian offering by incorporating Arabic influences and plenty of seafood. To top it off, Sicily offers some fantastic wines that you won’t commonly find elsewhere.

Algarve in Portugal

Golden cliffs and sandy beaches are a given along the Algarve coast, making it a popular choice for anyone seeking sunshine. Popular towns in this region include Albufeira, which is known for its vibrant day and nightlife, as well as Partimão, which is a larger city for you to discover. To add something special to the trip, you could integrate a cruise, allowing you to enjoy the sun and views even before you’ve reached the final destination. Plus, your food and accommodation are both taken care of.

Lanzarote in Canary Islands

A popular option for those seeking out winter sun, Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, sitting off the northwest coast of Africa. The beaches here are sensational, with coves and huge swathes of sandy beaches to settle down on. Why not mix up trips to the beach with the range of adventure activities on offer? You can go hiking and cycling, or you can try your hand at a range of watersports. Think windsurfing, scuba diving and more.
