Have you ever noticed these gold coin looking plaques fixed in to the streets of Windsor town centre? Do you know what they’re for? We grabbed the boys scooters and went on an adventure to find out more about our local town.
These were designed in 2015 to mark Queen Elizabeth being our longest reigning monarch. They are part of a self guided 6.373km to commemorate the 63 years, 7 months and 3 days that she had reigned at the time. The tour takes you on an adventure through the historical town, showcasing 63 points of interest.
Using a free map you can download online (link below), it not only guides you but provides historical content about the town, many relating back to the monarchy.
It starts at the most well known tourist point in Windsor, Windsor Castle which is at the top of Peascod Street – Windsor’s High Street.
It takes you from the castle, through the cobbled streets past The Guildhall where Prince Charles and Camilla were wed before heading to beautiful Long Walk. This very popular route is well known and is a 2.65 miles of paved path from the Castle into Windsor Great Park to the Copper Horse. Great for scooters.
The tour doesn’t head up as far as the Copper Horse but takes a turn a quarter of the way down with views of Frogmore House in the distance on the left.
It then meanders through some quaint residential roads before about half way round, ending up in Bachelors Acre. This is a great place to stop, let the kids have a run around with a play park aimed at younger children, a refreshment kiosk and public toilets. A fab place in the warmer months when the fountains are on which the kids enjoy running through and parents relax on picnic blankets. Be sure to spot The Windsor Lady (The Queen & her Corgis). One of four statues to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
The tour takes approximately 2 hours to complete on buggy friendly paths and is dog friendly.
No prebooking is required and its great for all ages to spot the artefacts in the map and discover why they are there.
The highlight for my eldest was finding a copy of the death warrant for Charles I – something I have never and probably would have ever noticed despite living in Windsor all my life. My youngest just loved finding the “gold coins” and still does whenever we head in to Windsor town centre.
